Standby Generators

The Southern Black Hills Water System is taking steps to insure continuous water supply for our customers.  We are in the process of acquiring and installing 6 standby generators in critical locations within the SBHWS infrastructure.

Each generator will have an automatic transfer switch.  When utility power drops, the generator will start up, and the power source will be automatically transferred to the generator.  When utility power is restored, the power source will be transferred back, and the generator will shut down.  The generators will be fueled by propane.

Here are the locations and sizes of the generators.
  • Streeter Well, 30kW
  • Argyle water tower, 30kW
  • Water plant, 60kW
  • Spring Creek Acres, 60kW
  • Argyle booster, 90kW
  • Junction booster, 90kW

Bids were received from 6 suppliers.  The bids were evaluated and compared by an electrical engineering firm.  The SBHWS board selected the bid from RDO Equipment.

The total cost of the project will be about $150,000, which will be paid by a grant from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The generators have all been installed and tested.
